OpenShift migration advisor turns VMware assessments into a recurring planning workflow
New report comparisons, exports and an offline analyzer move the tool beyond one-time inventory discovery.
Red Hat has expanded OpenShift migration advisor from a one-time VMware inventory assessment into a workflow that teams can refresh, compare and share as migration plans change. The company’s engineering post, originally published October 26 and updated November 2, describes new recurring reports, historical comparisons and export controls. The project’s v0.30.0 release notes add an offline analyzer for RVTools data and support for multiple standalone inventory files.
Reports can now be rerun and compared
The most consequential change is that an assessment no longer has to remain a static snapshot. Teams can run a new report from the same discovery appliance after their VMware inventory changes, then compare it with earlier reports. Red Hat says the comparison view can surface shifts in VM counts, migration-readiness improvements and remaining blockers.
Reports also include more cluster and assessment details, operating-system support grouped by certification tier, and application information at both environment and VM level. Users can label, group or exclude inventory items so that a report reflects the migration scope under discussion rather than every discovered VM.
That matters because migration programs rarely move as a single event. A refreshed assessment gives platform teams a way to measure whether remediation work is reducing blockers before they schedule another migration wave.
Exports and planning tools broaden the audience
Migration advisor can now export selected metrics as CSV, reports as PDF or HTML, and charts as PNG. Those formats make the same assessment usable in architecture reviews, cost discussions and audit material without requiring teams to rebuild the analysis elsewhere.
The planning side also gains a refreshed cluster-complexity form, storage-offload estimates and rightsizing recommendations. A total-cost-of-ownership workflow is available to partners. The project documentation describes the broader service as a VMware-to-OpenShift Virtualization readiness tool that can ingest either an RVTools spreadsheet or live data from a discovery appliance.
Version 0.30 adds a disconnected path
The v0.30.0 notes introduce an Offline Analyzer, a standalone application that can inspect RVTools exports without connecting to vSphere. Standalone mode can accept multiple RVTools files and lets users replace or delete earlier uploads. The release also adds VM tags and custom attributes for filtering and grouping, plus an option to include guest-process information in CSV and Excel exports.
For disconnected environments, the console can accept a manually uploaded subset-inventory ZIP file. The release also adds Network I/O Control fields to the assessment API, although the notes say those fields are not yet exposed in the user interface.
The practical change is not merely a longer report. OpenShift migration advisor is becoming a repeatable planning surface: collect or upload inventory, scope it, estimate the target, rerun the assessment and show what changed.
